Panama Residency & Visa Options — Complete Guide for Expats

Panama is remarkably accessible for foreign nationals — regardless of nationality. Here are the main pathways to residency.

The Pensionado Visa

The best-known and most direct visa for people with a pension entitlement — open to all nationalities.

Requirements

  • Monthly pension entitlement from $1,000 (state or private)
  • Valid passport (at least 2 years remaining validity)
  • Criminal background check from home country (with Apostille)
  • Health certificate (issued in Panama)
  • Apostille on all official documents

Benefits

  • Permanent residency status
  • 50% discount on hotel stays
  • 30% discount on public transport
  • 25% discount on restaurant bills
  • Tax-free import of household goods (one-time)
  • Possible exemption from certain taxes on foreign income

Timeline: approx. 3–6 months after entry with proper preparation.

Friendly Nations Visa

For citizens of 50 "friendly nations" — including the US, Canada, UK, and most EU countries. Suitable for younger people, professionals, and entrepreneurs.

Three qualification routes

  • Real estate: Purchase of property in Panama from $200,000
  • Fixed deposit: Deposit of $200,000 in a Panamanian bank (min. 3 years)
  • Employment: Work contract with a Panamanian company (min. $850/month)

Process

  1. Enter Panama as a tourist
  2. Hire a lawyer (legally required)
  3. Submit documents: passport, apostilled criminal background check, health certificate, proof of economic ties
  4. Provisional processing permit (6 months while under review)
  5. 2-year provisional residency card
  6. Then: permanent residency

Timeline: approx. 4–6 months to provisional approval. Attorney required: Applications cannot be submitted without a licensed Panamanian lawyer.

Remote Worker Visa (Digital Nomad)

For freelancers and employees of foreign companies who work location-independently.

Requirements

  • Verifiable annual income of at least $36,000 from abroad
  • No employment with Panamanian companies
  • Valid passport, health insurance, criminal background check

Conditions

  • Valid for 9 months, extendable once for a total of 18 months
  • Family members cannot be included
  • Must switch to another visa programme afterwards

Cost: approx. $300 in government fees. Tip: This visa works well as an entry point — to test Panama for 18 months before committing to a long-term programme.

Investor Visa

  • Friendly Nations Visa (investment route): from $200,000 in real estate or as a fixed-term deposit
  • Qualified Investor Visa: from $300,000 (until October 2026), then from $500,000
